Pope offers condolences for Italian soldiers killed in Afghanistan

Pope Benedict XVI has issued a statement of sympathy upon the deaths of 6 Italian soldiers who were killed by a bomb while serving in Afghanistan. Father Federico Lombardi, director of the Vatican press office, lamented the "violence against the very people who are working for peace." The casualties have prompted widespread calls for a withdrawal of all Italian troops serving in Afghanistan.
