Bishop Stephen Blaire of Stockton, speaking on behalf of California bishops, welcomed the California Supreme Court decision upholding Proposition 8, the amendment approved by state voters in November 2008 that defines marriage as the union of a man and a woman. The court also ruled that the 18,000 homosexual couples who were married during the months when same-sex marriage was legal in California are still to be considered married.
“We laud the California Supreme Court’s confirmation of Proposition 8, which preserves the traditional understanding of marriage in the state’s constitution,” said Bishop Blaire. “We, however, are disappointed that the same Court validated the interim same-sex ‘marriages.’”
