Archbishop Dolan urges men to consider priesthood, says Church must be ‘protector of the immigrant’

May 04, 2009

In an intereview with the Lower Hudson Valley Journal News, Archbishop Timothy Dolan of New York said that “the Church must be seen, as it has in the past, as the great protector of the immigrant.”

“We do have to show a more energetic solicitude to the needs of our Latino Catholics to make sure they do indeed feel at home,” he added. “[T]his is not an Anglo church, that this is not just an Irish church, this is not just an American church, it is a Catholic Church, where we need them, we want them, we value them.”

Archbishop Dolan added that a decline in priestly vocations is not inevitable. “You bet we have problems, but we’re also serving a man who happens to be the Son of God, who told us he would be with us until the end of time and that the gates of hell will not prevail against us. And that we should not be afraid. So come aboard. You’re going to love it.”
