New Orleans archbishop will not attend Xavier U. commencement honoring abortion advocate

April 23, 2009

Archbishop Alfred Hughes of New Orleans has indicated that he will not attend commencement ceremonies at Xavier University because the school has invited Donna Brazile, a prominent advocate of legal abortion, to address the assembly and receive an honorary degree. Brazile, who is a Catholic, managed the presidential campaign of Al Gore in 2004; she is now a political commentator. The archbishop's decision to absent himself from the commencement ceremonies matches that of Bishop John D'Arcy of Fort Wayne, Indiana, who has already said that he will not attend the ceremonies at Notre Dame honoring President Barack Obama.
