Papal message to theology conference

September 04, 2015

In a video message to a theological conference taking place in Argentina, Pope emphasized the importance of bridging the gaps between faith and life and between theology and the Church’s pastoral mission.

The theologian, the Pope said, is “a son of his people,” “a believer,” and “a prophet,” and should avoid the extremes of taking refuge in the past and disavowing the past.

"The theologian is primarily a son of his people." At first I was confused by Pope Francis' reference to "his people," thinking that he was referring to a specific place and culture. But at the end of the paragraph his meaning became clear: "This leads him to recognise that the Christian people among whom he was born have a theological sense that he cannot ignore." Thus the theologian's "people" are us, all Catholics who embrace our heritage to pursue Christ in faith, hope, and charity.
