Palestinian archbishop arrested in protest against Israeli 'security wall'

August 31, 2015

Archbishop Michel Sabbah, the retired Latin-rite Patriarch of Jerusalem, was among the Palestinian Christian demonstrators arrested by Israeli police on August 30 in a protest against the “security wall” being built through Palestinian territory.

Hundreds of Palestinian Christians gathered at a spot where construction is proceeding on the security wall, which divides local residents from the fields they cultivate. In April the Israeli supreme court had halted construction, but in July the court reversed itself, allowing the construction of the wall to continue.

“Whatever you do, no matter what your courts say, this land belongs to us and will return to us one day,” the archbishop said in a challenge to Israeli authorities before his arrest.
