Indian cardinal: prime minister has not fulfilled promise to protect Christians from violence

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has not delivered on his promise to protect the Christian minority from Hindu extremists, Cardinal Telesphore Toppo has charged.
Speaking to Aid to the Church in Need, Cardinal Toppo cited an increase in anti-Christian violence, associated with a rise in the activity of Hindu nationalists. He said that although Modi had pledged to protect Christians, police remain slow to respond to threats and even to mob activities. “They have not come out to protect and defend,” he said.
