New Vatican financial standards serve pastoral needs of Church, says FIA chief

June 02, 2015

Encouraging transparency and accountability in Vatican financial dealings is “a moral duty to the Church,” the new head of the Vatican’s Financial Information Authority (FIA) said in an exclusive interview with the Catholic News Agency.

Tomasso Di Ruzza, who took over the FIA leadership in January, said that the task of his office is not merely to bring the Vatican into compliance with current European standards for financial transactions. More importantly, he said, the FIA is “adopting international standards coherently with the nature and the mission of the Holy See in the world.”

Di Ruzza reported that the Vatican’s new standards have already produced positive results, cutting down opportunities for financial misconduct. He acknowledged that, because of the weakness of human nature, it is never possible to eliminate the possibility of fraud or theft. But he likened the work of the FIA to that of the immune system in the human body, guarding against the possibility of infection.
