The European Union should be built on the basis of “the sacredness of the human person, around inalienable values,” the Vatican’s Secretary for Relations with States said in March 5 address to legal advisers of the European bishops’ conferences.
Archbishop Paul Gallagher reminded his listeners that in his November 2014 address to the European Parliament, Pope Francis had focused on “respect for human rights not for political reasons, but because they are engraved in the heart of every human person.”
The archbishop also spoke about the situation facing migrants in Europe, saying that the lack of a comprehensive policy among the European nations has led to pressure for “particularistic solutions” that fail to respect the dignity of immigrants.
