December 09, 2014
Cardinal Jorge Maria Mejia, the former director of the Vatican archives, died on December 9 at the age of 91.
Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and ordained to the priesthood there, Jorge Mejia served at the Vatican from 1986 until his retirement in 2003. He was secretary of the Congregation for Bishops, then secretary of the College of Cardinals, and finally became the Vatican archivist and librarian in 1998. He was elevated to the College of Cardinals by Pope John Paul II in 2001.
Upon learning of the death of his countryman, Pope Francis saluted the deceased cardinal for his “long years of service with fidelity and competence to various organs of the Holy See.”
With the death of Cardinal Mejia, there are now 208 living members of the College of Cardinals, of whom 96 are under the age of 80 and therefore eligible to vote in a papal conclave.
