Supreme Court to hear case on pregnancy discrimination

December 01, 2014

The US Supreme Court will hear arguments this week on a lawsuit brought by a woman who says that she lost her job at the United Parcel Service (UPS) because of her pregnancy.

Peggy Young worked a UPS driver until her doctor said that, because of her advancing pregnancy, she should not lift heavy objects. Since UPS drivers are required to be able to lift 70-pound packages, the corporation told Young that she would be placed on unpaid leave until her pregnancy ended.

Saying that UPS made accommodations for employees with other health concerns, Young sued, saying that the company’s policy was a violation of the federal Pregnancy Discrimination Act. (Since her departure, UPS has changed its policies.) Lower courts ruled against her, but the Supreme Court agreed to hear an appeal. The case has created a rare agreement between feminists and pro-life activists.
