Rochester bishop issues guidelines for celebrating sacraments

October 07, 2014

Bishop Salvatore Matano of Rochester, New York, has issued a set of comprehensive guidelines for the administration of the sacraments, calling for careful attention to the liturgical and canonical rules of the Church.

In a cover letter introducing the guidelines, Bishop Matano urges ministers to “take very seriously the implementation of all that is needed and required for the proper celebration and reception” of the sacraments. His message implicitly acknowledged that the Church’s norms had frequently been ignored in parishes of the Rochester diocese.

Bishop Matano was installed in Rochester in January of this year. In July he issued an order barring the widespread practice of allowing lay people to preach homilies at Mass. At the time, the bishop said that it was “a bit perplexing” why that practice had persisted despite a clear Church prohibition.

We have been forced to suffer through Bishop Clark long enough. Maybe now, with a return to Catholic teachings, more real men will find a calling to the priesthood. Thank you Bishop. Vermont's loss is our gain.
