Pope greets 'his' Argentine soccer team

August 20, 2014

Pope Francis enjoyed a light-hearted meeting on August 20 with members of the San Lorenzo soccer team from Buenos Aires, who were bringing the trophy they had won in this year’s Latin American championships.

Pope Francis has long been a card-carrying member of the San Lorenzo club, and said that cheering for the team forms “part of my cultural identity.” The team had pledged that if they won the Copa Libertadores, they would bring the trophy to Rome.

The Pope congratulated each member individually, posing for pictures with the team after his regular Wednesday public audience.
