Vatican newspaper tribute to film on Christ
July 22, 2014
The July 21-22 edition of L’Osservatore Romano included five articles devoted to The Gospel According to St. Matthew, a film released 50 years ago.
Emilio Ranzato, who wrote two of the articles, described the black-and-white film as “a masterpiece” and “probably the best movie” about Christ.
Directed by the late Pier Paolo Pasolini (1922-75), an Italian Marxist, the 1964 movie has earned praise for its fidelity to the Gospel text. The Vatican included it in its 1995 list of 45 great films.
