European bishops' leader pledges Church support for EU

April 30, 2014

The president of the Commission of Bishops’ Conferences of the European Community (COMECE) has issued a statement applauding the expansion of the European Union into Eastern Europe, and calling for further steps toward European unity.

Cardinal Reinhard Marx of Munich, in a statement issued for the 10th anniversary of the “eastward expansion” of the EU, said that the addition of member-nations from the former Soviet bloc “resulted in a real reunification of Europe.” But he added that fostering true unity “still remains a challenge.” Cardinal Marx said that the Church has a duty to promote unity within “the family of nations which is the EU.”
