Mexican reports call for more clarity from Legionaries
February 13, 2009
In a survey of Mexican coverage of the crisis within the Legionaries of Christ, Thomas Peters of the American Papist notes that Archbishop Carlos Aguiar Retes, the president of the Mexican bishops' conference, has praised the order for revealing evidence that Father Marcial Maciel led a double life, and urged complete candor in future announcements. But Peters also takes note of a report in Proceso that suggests the Vatican already had evidence of Maciel's transgressions, and may have pressed the Legion into their disclosure.
