Reflect again on the mystery of the Incarnation, Pope encourages faithful

January 05, 2009

At his Angelus audience on Sunday, January 4, Pope Benedict XVI remarked that the day's Gospel repeated the reading of Christmas Day. "After the chaos of racing around buying gifts," he said, "the Church invites us again to contemplate the mystery of Christ's birth." The prologue of St. John's Gospel, he said, is "an astonishing text," centered on the "unheard-of and humanly inconceivable novelty" that "the Word became flesh." This is "not a figure of speech," the Pontiff observed, but "the impassioned witness of a humble fisherman." The apostles, living with Jesus, recognized that He was the fulfillment of the Scriptures, the Holy Father explained. "The Child of Bethlehem reveals and communicates to us the true 'face' of the good and faithful God."
