Pelosi: Catholics ‘have this conscience thing’

November 23, 2011

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, a Catholic renowned for her support of legalized abortion, has criticized efforts by the US bishops and others in support of conscience-protection legislation for health care workers.

The Washington Post reports:

Catholic health-care providers in particular have long said they’d have to go out of business without the conscience protections that Pelosi says amount to letting hospitals “say to a woman, ‘I’m sorry you could die’ if you don’t get an abortion.” Those who dispute that characterization “may not like the language,’’ she said, “but the truth is what I said. I’m a devout Catholic and I honor my faith and love it...but they have this conscience thing’’ that she insists put women at physical risk, although Catholic providers strongly disagree.

On one occasion, she said, laughing, one of her critics on the topic of abortion, speaking on the House floor, said, “Nancy Pelosi thinks she knows more about having babies than the Pope. They think like this. And of course I do — I think the Pope would agree — and I know more than you, too, mister.’’

Why can't we just cut to the chaste and be honest about this. None other than OUR American Catholic Bishops ALLOW this woman to call herself Catholic. And just what else is there to say?

Boy, talk about off-topic! The current conscience debate centers around contraception & sterilization, not abortion. What woman ever died from lack of contraception or sterilization? Or for want of an abortion, for that matter. On top of the fact that they are readily available even without Catholic institutions providing coverage for them.

Nobody ever asks her just what "devout" means to her. That she says the Rosary every day? She keeps getting more and more outrageous and nobody does anything about it.

Honor it and love it? But, she ignores it and shows her ignorance of it every time she opens her mouth on the topic. Note, too, she says "They" have this conscience thing, not "we". May we assume from that statement that she has no conscience? One could be forgiven for doing so. As Hal said, where is her bishop? How much scandal must we tolerate from this woman!? And don't get me started on Biden, Sibelius, O'Malley of MD, etc, etc. How long, oh Lord?

Time to tell her she can no longer receive Holy Communion without a public confession. Then, and only then, will we find out just how much love she has for the Eucharist, or even if she believes in the Real Presence.

In what sense is this woman meaningfully "Catholic"? Anyone? The sad thing is, more people listen to her than any particular Bishop. Guess that $26 million was money well spent! She made this comment yesterdday and I've been (not) amazed by the torrent of correction coming from the "esteemed" episcopate. Bah!
