Catholic Recipe: Hot Mulled Claret

    INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 cups bottled cranberry juice cocktail
  • strip of peel from 1/2 lemon
  • 6 allspice berries
  • 12 whole cloves
  • 16 to 20 lemon slices studded with whole cloves
  • 2 bottles (4/5 quart each) claret wine

Mulled wine is a traditional refreshment during the winter holidays, particularly Christmas and New Years.

DIRECTIONS

Combine sugar, water, and cranberry juice in large saucepan. Add lemon peel, allspice berries, and cloves. Stir over medium heat until sugar dissolves; bring to boil; boil 15 minutes. Add wine; heat, but do not boil. Strain. Serve hot in mugs, with clove-studded lemon slices and cinnamon stick stirrers. Makes 16 to 20 servings.
