Vatican security 'very high,' Italian government minister reports

February 18, 2015

Security precautions around the Vatican are “very high,” Italy’s interior minister has disclosed.

Angelino Alfano, speaking to reporters on February 17 after a meeting with Vatican officials, said that security “was already very high indeed, and it remains so.” Italian journalists have recently reported that the Vatican is a target of Islamic terrorists.

However the Vatican’s Secretary of State revealed that Alfano had reported “there are no specific threats” against the Vatican. Cardinal Pietro Parolin said that while there is “a media war on the part of ISIS [the Islamic State],” and jihadists frequently pledge to conquer Rome, there have been no concrete threats.

The cardinal concluded that Vatican officials should be “careful, vigilant, without falling into alarmism.”
