Pope tells Swiss bishops: lead the flock to the risen Christ
December 01, 2014
Pope Francis received the bishops of Switzerland in audience on December 1 and stated that “without a living faith in the risen Christ, the beautiful churches and monasteries gradually become museums, the commendable works and institutions lose their soul, leaving only empty spaces and forlorn people.”
Vatican Radio reported that the Pope handed the text of his address to the bishops and greeted them individually.
While encouraging the bishops’ ecumenical efforts, Pope Francis emphasized that ecumenism does not mean hiding one’s identity and cautioned them not to hide the Church’s “Eucharistic faith.”
Likewise, while welcoming active lay involvement in Swiss parishes, the Pope called upon the bishops to have a “clear respect for the difference between the common priesthood of the faithful and priesthood of ministers.”
The Pontiff also expressed his hope that “the Church in Switzerland will clearly be the Body of Christ, the People of God, and not only a beautiful organization, another NGO [non-governmental organization].”
