If you want edible decorations then follow the recipe for Speculatius (see linked recipe), but before baking make a hole through the cookie for hanging purposes. When they are cool you can color the cookies with food coloring mixed with egg white. This mixture gives a nice shiny surface and can be painted on with a paint brush. Finally hang the decorations on the tree with ribbon.

If you want decorations that will last but are not to be eaten then make them in the following way:

DIRECTIONS

1. Mix the ingredients into a firm dough.

2. Roll out on a floured surface and cut into shapes as required. Make a hole through each before baking.

3. Bake in oven at 250 degrees for 40 minutes.

4. Color with poster paint or felt-tip pens and, when dry, varnish. Then hang on the tree with colored ribbons.
