US bishops appoint theologian to strengthen CCHD’s Catholic identity

Catholic World News - November 10, 2010

The academic dean of Mount St. Mary’s Seminary in Maryland-- often mentioned among the leading American seminaries faithful to the Church’s Magisterium-- has been named consulting theologian to the Catholic Campaign for Human Development, the US bishops’ controversial anti-poverty program.

The appointment of Father Daniel Mindling “is an important step to deepen the Catholic identity of the work of CCHD without our losing the vision that originally inspired the bishops to create this essential and unique expression of Catholic commitment to those who are poor,” said Bishop William Murphy of Rockville Centre, chairman of the US bishops’ Committee on Domestic Justice and Human Development.

It is comforting to hear of the appointment of Fr. Mindling. We should pray for his work with the CCHD. I have not been able to contribute in recent drives because I felt my money would be used against Catholic teachings. I would like to return to contributing and will follow this development closely.

I was one of Fr. Mindling's students when I was studying for the priesthood at Mount St. Mary's. He is, indeed, a moral theologian -- and a fine one at that.

I hope he's a moral theologian. CCHD's principal confusion seems to be in the moral arena.

This is really very heartening. We need to have a CCHD we can believe in, and we need to have means to stop the abuses that exist, and we need to have liberal clerics and bishops stop standing in the way of reform.
