Pontiff blesses bronze bust of Pope Pius XII

Pope Benedict XVI blessed a bronze bust of his predecessor Venerable Pius XII at his June 2 general audience, according to a German-language Vatican Radio report. Pope Benedict also greeted Sister Margherita Marchione, the 88-year-old American historian and defender of Pius XII's wartime record.

    Contrary to reports by the secular press that Pius XII was silent about the persecution of the Jews by the Nazis in Italy and beyond Sr. Margherita Marchione' scholarship reveals the presence of an ongoing malicious conspiracy of silence to suppress the truth about his efforts in and outside of Italy to help the Jews. He spoke out officially on several occasions against Hitler and the actions of Nazi Germany; provided safe haven in convents, monasteries and the Vatican itself for Jews
