Pontiff blesses bronze bust of Pope Pius XII

Pope Benedict XVI blessed a bronze bust of his predecessor Venerable Pius XII at his June 2 general audience, according to a German-language Vatican Radio report. Pope Benedict also greeted Sister Margherita Marchione, the 88-year-old American historian and defender of Pius XII's wartime record.

He spoke out officially on several occasions against Hitler and the actions of Nazi Germany; provided safe haven in convents, monasteries and the Vatican itself for Jews
