Physician: Pope John Paul never asked for sedatives, even in most intense pain

In an interview that appeared in the May 17-18 edition L’Osservatore Romano, Dr. Renato Buzzonetti reflected on his years as Pope John Paul II’s personal physician. “The physical pain, in the last periods, was intense, but for him there was above all the moral and spiritual suffering of a man on the cross, who accepted all with courage and patience: he never requested sedatives, not even in the final phase.”
