Vermont diocese to pay over $20M in abuse settlements
May 14, 2010
The Diocese of Burlington has agreed to pay over $20 million to settle 29 lawsuits alleging the sexual abuse of minors by priests. Vermont’s sole diocese will pay $17.65 million to settle 26 pending cases and at least $2.35 million to three victims who have won jury trials.
“I once again apologize most sincerely for the pain the victims have suffered,” said Bishop Salvatore Mantano in a May 13 letter. “I ask that you join me in praying always for these wounded and hurt brothers and sisters … I also beg [Our Lord’s] forgiveness for any insensitivity or lack of charity which I may have shown throughout this process.”
