India: blasphemous cartoon sparks new religious violence

Religious violence broke out in India's Punjab region after the publication of a cartoon that pictured Jesus drinking beer and smoking a cigarette. After Christians marched in the town of Batala to protest the blasphemous image, Hindu gangs fought back, attacking Christian shops. Bishop Anil Couto of Jalandhar condemned the "provocative actions" but called for a restoration of peace and order.
