Synod committee for Americas discussed inculturation, corruption, evangelization

December 01, 2009

At a mid-November meeting in Rome, the Special Assembly of the Synod of Bishops for the Americas discussed how Christian education should help embed the Gospel message firmly in American culture. In a December 1 report on the meeting, Archbishop Nikola Eterovic, the secretary-general of the Synod of Bishops, explained that "the process of inculturation depends to a large extent on a balanced education in the faith."

The meeting also discussed problems in the Americas, including "drug trafficking, the recycling of illicit profits, corruption, violence, the arms race, racial discrimination, foreign debt, inequality between social groups and the thoughtless destruction of nature," the archbishop said. He added that the bishops participating in the discussion spoke of "the ease with which arms are able to circulate," especially in Latin America, and the need to curb the arms trade. On a more positive note the bishops discussed "the great continental mission" that is now underway in Latin America, sparking a series of initiatives to promote evangelization.

An interesting listing of the problems in the Americas. I would have thought that the destruction of marriage and the family would have at least gotten an honorable mention.
