Pope to visit Cyprus

October 01, 2009

The government of Cyprus has announced that Pope Benedict XVI will visit the island nation in June 2010. President Demetris Christofias issued an invitation to the Pontiff during his own March visit to the Vatican.

Within the past month, officials in Great Britain, Malta, and Portugal have also revealed that they are expecting papal visits during the coming year.

In keeping with its usual policy the Vatican has not officially announced plans for the Pope's trips. However the director of the Vatican press office, Father Federico Lombardi, has spoken informally to reporters about plans for the trips to Portugal and Malta, and said that the speculation of a trip to Great Britain is a "good hypothesis." Vatican Radio tacitly confirmed the 4th trip by saying that Church leaders in Cyprus were looking forward to the Pope's arrival.
