Scranton bishop warns Senator Casey on receiving Communion

April 30, 2009

Bishop Joseph Martino of Scranton, Pennsylvania, who has repeatedly warned Senator Bob Casey that he is endangering his status within the Catholic Church by voting against pro-life initiatives, underlined those warnings after Casey voted to confirm Kathleen Sebelius as Secretary of Health and Human Services. A statement from the Scranton diocese indicated "future determinations will be made regarding whether Sen. Casey is worthy to receive Holy Communion,” but for now the Senator was encouraged to "reflect on his actions and ask himself if he should receive the Sacrament.”
