Bishop criticizes Obama administration over lack of genocide designation

December 10, 2015

Testifying before a congressional committee, the Chaldean Catholic bishop of Detroit criticized the Obama administration for not designating the Islamic State’s killing of Christians in Iraq and in Syria as a genocide.

“The US government should not turn a blind eye to the genocidal atrocities,” Bishop Frank Kalabat said on December 9, according to a Detroit News report. “Proclaim it for what it is.”

“The Obama administration again refuses to recognize their plight,” he added. “I say, shame on you.”

The administration “is reportedly considering declaring the ISIS treatment of Yezidis to be genocide, but there is no indication that Christians will be included,” added Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ). “This is absurd.”
