26 martyrs of the Spanish Civil War beatified

November 23, 2015

Blessed Federico da Berga and 25 other Capuchin Franciscan friars who were killed out of hatred for the faith in 1936 and 1937 were beatified as martyrs on November 21.

Cardinal Angelo Amato, prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, presided at the Mass of beatification, which took place in Barcelona’s cathedral.

“They were assassinated in Spain during the ferocious persecution against the Church in the century before this one,” Pope Francis said following his November 22 Angelus address. “They were priests, professed youth awaiting ordination, and lay brothers, belonging to the Capuchins.”

“Let us entrust to their intercession the multitudes of our brothers and sisters who lamentably today, in various parts of the world, are persecuted because of their faith in Christ,” he added.
