Vatican workers prepare Holy Door for opening of Jubilee Year

November 18, 2015

Workers broke down the wall that seals off the Holy Door in St. Peter’s basilica on November 18, in preparation for the opening of the Jubilee Year of Mercy.

Pope Francis will open the Holy Door on December 8, inaugurating the Jubilee Year. The door has been closed since the end of the last Jubilee Year in 2000.

In a brief ceremony known as a Recognitio, the archpriest of the Vatican basilica, Cardinal Angelo Comastri, received a metal chest containing the official documents from the last Jubilee, and the key to the Holy Door, to be delivered to the Pope.

Similar ceremonies have been scheduled at the other major basilicas of Rome: St. John Lateran, St. Mary Major, and St. Paul Outside-the-Walls.
