Judge approves bankruptcy plan for Milwaukee archdiocese
November 09, 2015
A federal bankruptcy-court judge in Wisconsin has approved a reorganization plan for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee.
Judge Susan Kelley gave her approval to a plan that will divide $21 million among the 459 creditors who filed claims against the archdiocese. The creditors had reluctantly voted to accept the settlement, after years of debate, because further litigation would have drawn down the resources available for payment of the archdiocesan debts.
The Milwaukee archdiocese filed for bankruptcy protection in 2011, facing heavy liabilities because of claims by sex-abuse victims.
