Prelate lauds revisions to federal education legislation

July 17, 2015

The chairman of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee on Education has praised both houses of Congress for passing revisions to federal education law.

The House bill (the Student Success Act) and the Senate bill (the Every Child Achieves Act) will now be sent to a conference committee, which will draft compromise legislation that will be voted on by both houses. A USCCB press release said that “both bills contain significant improvements for providing equitable services for students and teachers in religious, private and independent schools.”

“This is wonderful news and a testament to what can be achieved when we put the needs of children first,” said Archbishop George Lucas of Omaha, who said that members of Congress “have put us one step closer towards restoring equity and ensuring that all children are afforded the educational services, benefits and opportunity our government has to offer, regardless of the type of school they attend.”
