Philadelphia, New York rush preparations for papal visit
July 03, 2015
City workers in Philadelphia are building an 8-foot security fence that will temporarily circle the Center City area during the visit by Pope Francis in September.
The fence will reportedly be raised on September 21, enclosing the site where the Pontiff will celebrate Mass. The area will be swept repeatedly by security officials. On September 25, the date of the Pope’s appearance, vehicles will be barred from an area up to four blocks from the circumference of the fence.
In New York, meanwhile, the schedule of restoration work at St. Patrick’s cathedral has been stepped up in a bid to complete the process before the Pope’s arrival in that city. The $175-million renovation project began three years ago.
