US House passes pro-life legislation

May 01, 2015

By a 228-192 vote, the House of Representatives has voted to overturn the District of Columbia’s Reproductive Health Non-Discrimination Amendment Act (RHNDA).

The city’s legislation forbids employers to discriminate against workers based upon their “reproductive health decisions.” The House resolution was sponsored by Rep. Diane Black (R-TN).

“RHNDA forbids all employers to ‘discriminate’ in hiring, firing, promotion and job benefits because an employee or his or her family member is making ‘reproductive health decisions’ on matters such as sterilization and abortion,” the National Committee for a Human Life Amendment explained, noting that pro-life organizations might be compelled to retain employees who have abortions.

The federal government has 30 business days to overturn legislation passed by the District of Columbia. Companion legislation in the Senate, sponsored by Rep. Ted Cruz (R-TX), is not expected to be voted upon within the time limit, and President Barack Obama is almost certain to veto the legislation.
