Cardinal Pell moves out of Vatican bank location, into new permanent office

April 15, 2015

Cardinal George Pell, the prefect of the Secretariat for the Economy, has moved out of his temporary office in the headquarters of the Vatican bank to a new location close to the other offices of the Secretariat.

The Australian cardinal’s new office location, in the apostolic palace, was previously occupied by officials of the Administration for the Patrimony of the Apostolic See. The Secretariat for the Economy has taken over some of the responsibilities of that office.

A spokesman for Cardinal Pell said that the office change had been planned “months ago,” and the time seemed right because of the recent approval of statutes establishing the duties of the new Secretariat.

Vatican observers noted that the presence of Cardinal Pell in the offices of the Vatican bank, the Institute for Religious Works, might have created some confusion since a council of cardinals is responsible for oversight of that institution.
