The website of the Bishops’ Conference of France has published an article by Father Patrick Verspieren, SJ, expressing opposition to a proposed change in French law on organ donations.
Under current law, said Father Verspieren, the consent to donate organs is presumed, with the proviso that family members are asked first whether the deceased would have donated his organs.
Under the proposed change, which is being discussed in the National Assembly, the family would no longer be consulted; instead, the consent to donate organs would be presumed unless the deceased had made known his opposition in a national registry.
