Italian cardinal to lead Congregation for Catholic Education

March 31, 2015

Pope Francis has named Cardinal Giuseppe Versaldi as the prefect of the Congregation for Catholic Education, one of the Roman Curia’s nine congregations.

Cardinal Versaldi, who has been serving as the head of the Prefecture for Economic Affairs, succeeds Cardinal Zenon Grocholewski, 75, who served as prefect since 1999.

Cardinal Versaldi, 71, was ordained to the priesthood in 1967. In addition to parish and diocesan work-- for a time, he was the future Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone’s vicar general in Vercelli-- he served as president of the Piedmontese Federation of Christian Counselors and taught psychology and canon law at the Pontifical Gregorian University.

He was named bishop of Alessandria, Italy, in 2007. Four years later, Pope Benedict named him president of the Prefecture for the Economic Affairs of the Holy See, and in 2012, created him a cardinal.

Pope Francis has not named a successor to Cardinal Versaldi at the Prefecture for the Economic Affairs.
