Pope sends message of appreciation to outgoing Italian President Napolitano

January 15, 2015

Pope Francis has sent a message of appreciation of Italy’s President Giorgio Napolitano, who announced his resignation this week.

In a telegram sent from the papal plane, as he traveled in Asia, the Pontiff said that he had just learned of Napolitano’s decision to step down. “I am spiritually close to you and wish to express to you my sentiments of sincere esteem and keen appreciation for your generous and exemplary service to the Italian nation,” the Pope wrote.

Napolitano, who is 89 years old, had been Italy’s president since 2006. His resignation took effect January 14.
