Indiana diocese ordered to pay $1.95M in IVF-dismissal case

December 26, 2014

Following over 51 hours of jury deliberation, a federal district court has ordered the Diocese of Fort Wayne – South Bend to pay a former Catholic school teacher $1.95 million in damages.

The diocese, which will appeal the verdict, did not renew Emily Herx’s teaching contract after her use of in vitro fertilization came to light. Herx contended during the trial she was the victim of sex discrimination.
