Church in Brazil begins Year of Peace
December 03, 2014
Citing widespread violence, including over 56,000 homicides in 2012, the National Conference of Bishops of Brazil has begun a year devoted to peace.
The year, approved unanimously at the bishops’ spring meeting, began on the First Sunday of Advent and will conclude on Christmas 2015.
“Peace is the fruit of justice,” said Cardinal Raymundo Damasceno Assis, the president of the episcopal conference. “It is therefore important to overcome social differences in our country.”
As it promotes initiatives on behalf of peace, the bishops’ conference is also working to counter political corruption, L’Osservatore Romano reported.
