Islamic State converts Mosul churches into prisons

December 02, 2014

The Islamic State has begun using some of the Christian churches in the city of Mosul as prisons, the Fides news service reports.

Reports from the city in northern Iraq indicate that prisoners are being housed in the church of the Immaculate Conception. Female prisoners are being held in St. George monastery, and some fear that they are being abused there.

Christians in Iraq are worried that because the Islamic State has occupied many churches, the buildings—some of them centuries old—could be destroyed in any military action aimed to liberate Mosul.
