Vatican confirms solidarity with Haiti, 5 years after deadly earthquake
November 25, 2014
Cardinal Robert Sarah is visiting Haiti this week, to mark the 5th anniversary of an earthquake that devastated the country and caused over 200,000 deaths.
Cardinal Sarah—who was named this week as the new prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship—will be traveling in his role as president of the Pontifical Council Cor Unum, the official papal charity. Cardinal Sarah has not yet been replaced at Cor Unum. His trip is intended to reaffirm the solidarity of the Holy See with the people of Haiti as they continue their reconstruction efforts.
The Vatican announced on November 25 that Pope Francis plans to hold a conference on Haiti in January 2015 at the Vatican. The purpose of the meeting will be to ensure continued attention to the needs of the Caribbean nation and its recovery after the earthquake.
