Indian pilgrims meet with Pontiff, celebrate newly canonized saints

November 24, 2014

Pope Francis met on November 24 with a group of pilgrims from India, members of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church, who had traveled to Rome for the canonization of two Indian saints, which took place the previous day.

The Pope praised the dynamism of the Syro-Malabar Church, noting “all its apostolic strength” and the surge of priestly and religious vocations in the state of Kerala, where the Syro-Malabar community is centered. He encouraged the pilgrims to honor their new heroes, Sts. Kuriakose Elias Chavara and Euphrasia Eluvathingal, and “treasure their lessons in evangelical living.”
