Cardinal Angelini dies at 98
November 24, 2014
Cardinal Fiorenzo Angelini, who led the Pontifical Council for Pastoral Assistance to Health Care Workers from 1985 to 1996, died on November 22. He had been the oldest living member of the College of Cardinals at the age of 98.
Ordained to the priesthood in 1940 and the episcopate in 1956, the prelate “exercised his long and intense ministry to build up the Church in Rome, in Italy and in the world, first as part of Catholic Action, then with praiseworthy apostolic zeal in hospitals and nursing homes in Rome,” Pope Francis said in a telegram of condolence.
Cardinal Angelo Sodano, the dean of the College of Cardinals, will preside at the November 24 funeral Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica, with Pope Francis presiding at the rite of final commendation.
