Pope will visit Islamic shrine on Jerusalem's Temple Mount RSS Facebook March 10, 2009

Pope Benedict XVI will visit the Dome of the Rock, the Islamic shrine on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, during his May visit there, the papal nuncio has disclosed. Archbishop Antonio Franco said that it had been "agreed in principle" that the Pontiff, accompanied by Islamic leaders, would enter the ancient building marking the spot from which, according to Muslim belief, Mohammed ascended to heaven. The Pontiff might also visit the Al-Aqsa mosque, which adjacent to the Dome of the Rock. A papal visit to the Temple Mount-- the site of many religious clashes-- will undoubtedly call for heavy security measures.
