Archbishop Simon-Victor Toné Bakot of Yaounde, Cameroon, has announced that the Church and the country's government will split the costs of hosting the visit there by Pope Benedict XVI later this month. The archbishop acknowledged that the costs would be steep, but said that since the Pontiff had been invited by both the government and the episcopal conference, the costs of planning and security would be shared. The government's share will be greater, however, because of the costs associated with major public events such as the Pope's outdoor Mass in a local soccer stadium.
