Father Lombardi reflects on anniversary of Pope's election

March 12, 2014

To mark the 1st anniversary of the election of Pope Francis, the head of the Vatican press office released a statement noting the “great dynamism” that the new Pope has provided for the Church.

Father Federico Lombardi said that the most noteworthy aspect of the 1st year of the pontificate has been “without doubt the great attention, the great attraction of the people – I say the people, meaning not only practicing Catholics, but everyone in this world – the great attention for this Pope, for his message.” He said that Pope Francis has touched upon a hope “very deeply rooted in the heart of the people.” The extraordinary attention that has been paid to the Pope’s public statements shows that “his message reaches its target,” he added.

Following tradition, the Vatican will celebrate the actual anniversary of the Pope's election, March 13, as a holiday.
